Hey how’re all you humans doin?  I was very insistent with Christine (she helps us blog)  that I needed to blog again so the humans out there lookin’ for a special dog like me don’t forget ’bout cool dogs like me… oh, wait, I’m the coolest dog I know, ha ha! But it is the truth, I always speak the truth.  Plus, I know how cool I am ’cause when Kate, Lea Ann, Christine, or one of our awesome volunteers leashes me up for a walk, the second I get outta my dog run, all the dogs in the whole kennel get all riled up!  I’ve heard our humans jokin’ with Kate sayin’ “we always know when your boy (I’m her favorite!) is goin’ for a walk, ’cause the whole kennel starts barkin'”.  They’re just jealous of my good looks, and ’cause I’m goin’ on a walk.  Enough ’bout them, this is my time to talk ’bout me.  I do like goin’ for walks, and am so excited when it’s my turn, I dash out, and when I get to the entrance to the kennel, I jump up and open it so whoever is walkin’ me knows they gotta get me outside fast, so they’ve gotta keep up with me.  Yesterday, I did somethin’ fun… I got away from Kate and made a break for it.  I ran out of the kennel area and headed straight for the door I go out when I’m goin’ on a walk… and even though someone tried to stop me, I dodged them and ran out the side door.  I had to mark my turf, and I made Kate work to catch me and leash me back up. Then we went for a little stroll.  I feel kinda bad I didn’t make it super easy for her to leash me up, but sometimes a dog’s gotta do what a dog’s gotta do, ya know?

I’m tellin’ you ’bout my “lightening fast dash” for the door ’cause even though I’ve blogged ’bout the kinda forever home I’d like, it’s real important for humans to understand me.  I’m a fantastic dog.  When I first arrived at the humane society, I had such severe injuries that our humans didn’t know if I’d walk, but now not only can I walk, but I run some, too!  I healed up great, but would you ever really doubt that ’bout me?  I am AMAZING.   I’m house-trained, like I never make a mess in my run, ever, and I walk nicely on a leash. But I’m also not an easy dog.  I don’t want to compare myself to Leroy (now Rufus), ’cause we all know I’m the better dog, but we do have some stuff in common.  I want all the attention for myself… so no other dogs, and I’m real curious ’bout cats, but not in a “good” way (humans and their rules). I also don’t think I’d do real good with young humans ’cause I have some baggage left over from being so badly injured and the pain from my injuries…  if I get tangled up in my leash or restrained, sometimes I panic and get kinda nasty, so you’d have to know how to handle that. If you’ve never dealt with that kinda stuff before, well I guess it can be a bit much to handle.  I’m tryin’ real hard to work on that and I’m improving, but it’s gonna take me a long, long time to be comfortable with stuff like that.

I’m goin’ into more details ’bout the kinda forever home I’d like ’cause I know there’s a satellite adoption event at Brookside Barkery and Bath this weekend, and even though I don’t wanna go (I gotta stay here and keep an eye on the goings ons here… plus I don’t need to go out to be noticed) I’ll be waitin’ here for some awesome humans to find me.

I’m not for everyone, but I’m perfect for someone.  When my new humans finally find me, believe me, I’ll let you know.  Some harder to adopt dogs like Elvis, Angie, and Bella all got adopted… so I know someone’s out there for me, but they just haven’t found me yet.  That’s cool ’cause until then I’m livin’ good here… and it’s so much fun to stir the other dogs up. I think they’re jealous of my good looks and ’cause I’m Kate’s favorite.

I’m gonna go for now… there’s some stuff goin’ on in the kennel I gotta check out.

Hercules the Magnificent

Hey humans, how are you doin?  A lot has been going on here, with adoptions and obedience classes, so I thought I would update you about the goings-on.  Our humans have started obedience classes for some of us shelter dogs… I already know a lot of commands, so I’m more advanced than other dogs in class.  Big news… Elvis has left the building!  He found a great home with a human he accompanies to work everyday.  Remy went to a new home, too, and Gandalf.  I’m happy for them, but also glad some of my competition is gone, so the spotlight can be on me a bit, right where it should be!  Now I can go back to having the title as the smartest dog in the kennel without any competition (Porter and Dixie, I know you’re both in Canine Good Citizens Classes at The Dog’s Spot, but I still think I’m the smartest).

Christine has been working with me quite a bit over the past few months with things I suppose I’m supposed to tolerate better, like being brushed and vaccinations, and having humans check me out.  I really don’t understand what the big deal is, but I guess I feel better without all of that extra fur… it is summer and warm outside.  I loathe admitting this, but I’m a little bit like Rufus (formerly Leroy), and Porter.  Until we came here, we lived on chains, so some things– like baths, brushing, and vetting– I don’t really like and don’t mind letting you know I’m soooo not a fan.  Christine knows how much I like food and treats, so she throws treats or food down for me to “find” while she tries to brush me.  Some days I’m more tolerant than others… since she insists I learn to tolerate brushing, I’m not always going to make it easy for her because it’s fun.  I think other dogs are more comfortable with this kind of attention, and since I’m not always a fan this is why I shouldn’t be in a home with small humans… I don’t think I’d like having my tail pulled or being “hugged” which is something I’ve heard small humans enjoy.  Ick… I prefer long walks, learning new things, and hanging out with adult humans.  I’d take treats, a Kong, or a yummy bone over hugs and tail pulling any day.

Yesterday Christine and Pete decided to teach me some new stuff.  A group of Eagle Scouts built us some agility equipment, so I tried some of it out.  I wasn’t totally sure of my balance on the Dog Walk or the A-Frame because I am a big guy, but I tried… Pete and Christine had some really, really yummy treats, and I try to make them happy.  I did like the Hoop Jump and did great after a couple of tries!  They both made such a big deal (and I had an audience with Alex, Gina, and Renee… so I really had to impress them).  I love learning new stuff, so I had fun and Christine made such a big deal when I jumped through the hoop telling me how smart and wonderful I am (I know this already, but I still love hearing it), so I hope I can do some more of this agility stuff again soon.  Pete knows how to do all kinds of stuff with agility and wants to teach some of our humans and dogs how to do agility exercises.  He knows if we learn how to do agility exercises, this will help us build our confidence (I have plenty of that), and provide us opportunities to do different things, and we will have an even better quality of life while we’re here.

My breakfast is ready, so bye for now!

Elvis the Goofball (Adopted!)

What is up humans?  About time I gotta blog again… sheesh I had to wait ’cause there’ve been lots of changes, like lots of dogs and puppies have found their forever homes this month!  So, I wanna tell ya’ll ’bout the kinda forever home I think would be awesome.

Ok, so first, and foremost, I’ve gots to be the ONLY  pet in the home ’cause I’m alotta dog, and ’cause I don’t wanna share the attention with any other dog.  If whatcha want is a big, smart, goofy dog, then I’m your dog and after ya meet me, you’d know you wouldn’t want any other dog.  I’m smart but different from Hercules and Porter smart, I’m my own kinda smart.  See, Porter and Hercules are smart ’cause they know lots of obedience stuff and love making their human handlers happy, and I’ll do some of that stuff, too, especially if there is easy cheese involved (I really love easy cheese)… but what sets me apart from them is train humans. For instance, all us dogs here have these really cool dog kennels that are indoor/outdoor so we can get some fresh air and sunshine whenever we want durin’ the day.  I play this game at the end of every day when Pete, or Joyce, or Lea Ann, tuck us all in for the night… I won’t come inside.  They’ve all tried to bribe me with treats and stuff, but I make them come ’round and bring me in from the outside… heh, heh!!

Another thing is when I first moved into the main kennel, I figured out how to open my guillotine door and let myself out… pretty cool, huh?  Pete said I’m the only dog who’s ever figured out how to do that… I’m just that awesome.  See why you wouldn’t need another pet if I were your dog… I’d keep you busy.  I love stuffed toys, too, and have learned how to make sure I get to have one when I go on walks, too!  My future family should have a tall fence, ’cause I can climb or jump fences, too (I’m full of special abilities!!), and maybe no really small humans ’cause even though I’m workin’ on my manners, I’m a big dude.

One more thing… it’d be best if the humans who adopt me have had experience with dogs like me, so they know how to handle me and take care of me right.  That’s all I got for now… gots to go, it’s almost time for Alex to get here and take me for a walk.

Elvis (Adopted!)

Today, one of our dedicated volunteers, Stan, took me to Intermediate Class at The Dogs’ Spot and I did a pretty good job.  Stan and Laura, the trainer, discovered I like doggy easy cheese…it’s awesome!!!  I’ll do more obedience commands if that’s gonna be my reward ’cause it’s delicious.  I’m pretty pooped, I’ve been on a walk, and we had a bunch of humans come through for Volunteer Orientation, and I went to obedience class!  I’m kinda glad this place is closed tomorrow so I can get some sleep!  I’ll fill ya in on more stuff soon.

Elvis the Goofball (Adopted!)

Hey, my name is Elvis.  Our humans call me a goofball cause I’m a little nutty and quirky.  I love stuffed toys, playing fetch in the yard and walks.  I’m a pretty silly, goofy boy who also loves to hang out in the hallway with people, especially when they give me a toy with a squeaker in it… I always find the squeaky thing cause I’m just that good.  I love to have my belly rubbed, too, and even though I’m a big boy, I like to kinda climb on people.  I’m taking obedience classes to work on my manners… I guess climbing on humans isn’t always nice but I don’t totally understand why, and they laugh when I do it.  Just thought I’d check in and say “what’s up”… gotta go, so maybe I can go for an extra walk today.
