Hey humans, what’s goin’ on with you?  Our humans are real busy here with some upcoming satellite adoption events, Art Unleashed, and there are 2 new humans who are training to work with us dogs!  There’s a satellite event on Saturday, August 15th, from 9 am (that’s early!) ’til 1pm called Tails on the Trails in Lenexa.  You can bring your dog, take your dog for a swim, enter the pet talent show, and meet lots of dog friendly vendors and adoptable dogs.  I’m gonna hang here ’cause I don’t really wanna go hang out with a bunch of other dogs… see I’m the kinda dog who really loves bein’ the ONLY pet in the home so I’m the center of attention!  I heard our humans talkin’ ’bout Tails on the Trails, and I guess it’s best that real dog friendly dogs go ’cause there’s gonna be lots of dogs there… so I think Farley, Ethan & Etta, Bowie, Mollie, and maybe a coupla other dogs are goin’ too.

Art Unleashed is a big deal, too, and that’s comin’ up on August 22nd.  It’s this real big fundraiser to help our humans here at HSGKC do all the great stuff they do for us… like take care of us when we’re not feelin’ good (like when I had heartworm treatment last year), and for new stuff like the BEG Program Pete has been workin’ on for us dogs!  Art Unleashed is a live and silent auction of original artwork, and I heard it’s a lot of fun.  If ya wanna learn more ’bout that and get yourself some tickets, check out hsgkc.org for details!

I suppose some of ya might be wonderin’ why I’m bloggin… well, I came back to HSGKC after being adopted last year.  See, our humans love us all so much they promise to always take us back if things aren’t workin’ out for us in our adoptive home… for dogs and cats, even if it’s 10 years from when we got adopted.  So, here’s the deal… I’m a kinda complicated dude.  I’m very, very smart… but I do got some quirks.  The humans who did adopt me loved me very much but, without meanin’ to be, I was a bit too much for them to handle.  I don’t wanna scare ya, ’cause I am a good boy!  I’m a Husky/Shepherd mix and I’m about 7 years old.  After I’ve been in a home for a bit, I feel it’s my job to be protective of my humans and my home, and even though I’m trying to do a good thing, I guess that makes it kinda hard on my humans if they have lots of people coming over.  So a quieter home without lots of visitors might be better for me. I am really, really affectionate, loyal, and sweet with adult humans I know. But I’ve gotta be the only pet in the home. I’m already house trained, and I’m good ’bout stayin’ in a kennel during the day.  I’m strong, too, but walk pretty good on a leash, and can walk with some other dogs, but they gotta respect my space bubble.  I’m just real happy the humans who had me brought me back here though, ’cause I know our humans will work hard to find an awesome match for me… someone who wouldn’t mind only havin’ one dog, and who’d work with me, and love me as I am.  I know I’d be a great dog companion for someone!

Time for me to go for a walk!

Bowie (Adopted!)

bowie6

Hey there humans, how-ya doin’?  My name is Bowie.  I’m a 5 year old Pit Bull mix with the most awesome eyes… see I’ve got one blue eye and one brown eye… cool, huh?  I guess our humans named me for some famous guy named David Bowie ’cause he’s got 2 different eye colors, too.  Anyways, I was found as a stray right after the 4th of July… all of those booms and bright stuff up in the sky was kinda scary, ‘specially ’cause I was out on my own.  Well, a nice woman found me and brought me here.  I was reallly skinny!!  I only weighed 33 pounds when I came in, I had some sores on my legs and didn’t smell so good (I overheard the humans who take care of us sayin’ I kinda looked like a baby hippopotamus, and I dunno what that is, but I’m guessin’ it’s pretty dang cute if it looks like me).  Now, ’cause our humans are soooo awesome, I weigh around 45 pounds, after less than 1 month!!!  They’re feedin’ me good here!

I guess ’cause I’m lookin’ so handsome now that’s why I gotta go to my first satellite adoption event thingy last Saturday, and… I’m goin’ to another one on Friday!!!  I’m really excited!  Me, Ethan & Etta, Farley, and maybe a couple more dogs are going to Tail Waggin’ Pet Stop for a human event called First Fridays… I think it’s got somethin’ to do with art… and hey, that reminds me, HSGKC has a BIG fundraiser comin’ up August 22nd called Art Unleashed… sorry, I got kind sidetracked.  So, anyways, we’ll be at the Tail Waggin’ Pet Stop this Friday, August 7 from 6-8 pm, if ya wanna come meet some of us!  I gotta say, Ethan & Etta are a hoot to watch!  They’re super cute together, and we’re all hopin’ they go to a home together!  I wish my best friend, Dwayne (our humans have been goin’ back and forth ’bout his name… some humans like the name Dwayne, and others like the name Bullwinkle… you humans are so FUNNY) could go, too, but he’s not quite ready to go to somethin’ like a satellite yet ’cause he’s still bein’ treated for demodex mange.  He’s real sweet, like me, and we LOVE playin’ together.  Sometimes though… if we’re left to our own devices, we kinda get into a lil bit of trouble… we don’t mean to, but we’re dogs, and sometimes we just wanna chew some stuff up.  Sorry ’bout the extension cord and the doggy bed, btw.  I think this is gonna be a busy month for our humans with the satellites and Art Unleashed comin’ up.  Check out hsgkc.org for more info about the upcoming events!  And, don’t forget, you may wanna come meet me on Friday!  I’m a real good boy, I walk nice on a leash, I’m good with other dogs, and I’m great with humans of all ages!

That’s all I got for now… ‘ll talk ’bout the kinda forever home I’d like the next time I blog (unless I get adopted… which could happen).  I’m gonna go hang with Dwayne for a bit, then take a nap.  Bye!

Ethan & Etta (Adopted)

ethan

hi humans!  i’m Ethan, an’ my sis is Etta!  i’m gonna try this blog thing first cuz my sis is a tiny bit shy at first… then she’s just as happy-go-lucky an’ outgoing as me!  here’s our story so far… we’re Pit Bull/Dachshund (funny spelling, huh?)/Corgi mixes or somethin’ like that, an’ we’re 6 months old.  KCK animal control found us, an’ we were real sick with parvovirus AND had dee-moh-dex mange, so we were brought here, after we went to VCA Welborn Animal Hospital cuz we had to get treated for parvo.  we’re so glad we got to come here!  we’re doin’ lots better now an’ our fur has grown back an’ everything!!  HSGKC has taken in lots of puppies since we came in who have dee-moh-dex mange, too… Wilbur, Homer, French Fry, an’ Dwayne… you’ll probly meet some of them soon, ‘cept for Wilbur cuz he’s gonna be adopted next week!

anethan&ettayways… i thought maybe you humans would like to know a lil more ’bout dee-moh dex so it doesn’t seem so scary!  ya see, dee-moh-dex is a mite that lives on all doggies an’ sometimes when doggies immune systems (i gotta say, humans got lots of big words for stuff…
sheesh!) are immature (like for us puppies), or if there’s a lot of stress (like we’re puppies fendin’ for ourselves on the streets without a home or a mommy), then the stupid lil mites get outta control an’ start attacking our fur!  how rude! as if we don’t already have enuff goin’ on!  anyways, sometimes it looks real bad… like we get scabs, an’ lee-juhns, an’ sometimes humans think we look icky… well we can’t help it!  we feel like we’ve got somethin’ called “poy-son ivy” (a rash humans get, i think) all over our whole bodies, an’ we itch real bad!  the good thing ’bout dee-moh-dex is that it’s not con-tay-jush to other doggies, kitties or humans!  the other kinda mange, scay-bees or sar-cop-tick mange is con-tay-jush!  i’m happy we don’t got that kind!  the humans here take real, real good care of us, an’ we take medicine to kill the stupid lil mites, an’ we gots to have regular medicay-ted baths til we get better!  how long it takes for us to be all healthy jus’ depends on how bad the mites are!  k, so i’m gonna let Etta talk ’bout somethin’ excitin’ for us tomorrow!

ettahi… i’m Etta an’ i heard our humans talkin’ ’bout a sat-el-ite adop-shun event me an’ Ethan getta go to tomorrow!!  i’m a tiny bit nervous ‘cuz i’m not totally sure what it’s all ’bout, but i’ve heard they’re lots of fun!  we’re gonna be at some place called Four Paws antry & Spa in Olathe from 11-3 on Saturday, August 1!  you can check out hsgkc.org for more info!  i think it’s gonna be fun… we’re gonna meet new humans, some doggies, an’ if i ‘member right, when doggies go to sat-el-ite adop-shun events, humans make a REAL big deal ’bout how cute us dogs are (an’ me and Ethan are real cute… ask anyone, an’ check out our video, too!), give us lots of treats, an’ play with us an’ stuff!  sometimes, humans meet doggies at the event thingies, an’ wanna even adopt dogs they meet!  that’d be soooo awesome!  me and Ethan really wanna go to a forever home together!  we’ve been thru a lot already, an’ our super nice humans don’t want us to be split up cuz we’re so cute together!  the next time we blog, we’ll talk ’bout the kinda forever home we want… unless a family decides they wanna adopt us before then… that’d be so cool!

k, we’re gonna say bye for now cuz it’s time for us to go outside an’ play with Wilbur! don’t forget to check out hsgkc.org for more info ’bout adopt-shun, the event tomorrow…an’ you gotta watch our video!  bye!!!!

Romy (Adopted!)

romy1

Hi everyone!  My name is Romy (I think I was named after a character in a movie called “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion”).  I’m a bit over 6 years old and I’m a Chocolate Lab with a really pretty coat!  I was surrendered to HSGKC back in February by the family who I lived with because they couldn’t afford a surgery I needed. I’m embarassed to say why I needed surgery but I guess you’ll wanna know…. I ate a sock… again.  Oops… well anyway I know my family loved me and wanted me to get better but they couldn’t afford all the stuff I needed to get better.  Anyways I’m soooo glad I ended up here!  I have a great thing goin’ here… I have a roommate I like, Luke (I had a pup named Reuben livin’ with me for a bit… and he’s nice and everything, but I like Luke ’cause he’s real calm), and our humans got me all better and I feel AWESOME!

I just found out I get to go to an event called Dog-n-Jog this Sunday, June 14!!!  I’m so excited!!  I love goin’ to satellite events ’cause I meet lots of new humans… and I hope every time I go that maybe I’ll meet someone who falls in love with me and wants to give me a forever home again!  In case you’re wonderin’, I think the other dogs who are goin’ are Brownie, Mila, Thomas, Aubrey, Marvin, Farley, Luke, and Nemo (he was adopted but had to come back here ’cause even though the humans he lived with LOVE him, the other doggy in the family just didn’t wanna share attention with him… so he’s back, but that’s his story to tell, I just wanted to fill ya in a bit).  Ok, so back to me… I’ve heard that Dog-n-Jog is lots of fun!  I’m really happy I get to go and ’cause there will be lots of humans there that maybe a couple families will be interested in learnin’ more ’bout me!  The other cool thing ’bout Dog-n-Jog is that it’ll raise money for HSGKC so our humans can keep doin’ all the good stuff they do for us dogs and cats who are here waitin’ for their forever homes!  They need donations to help pay for stuff, like the pictures I had to have taken of my belly (I think those pictures are called x-rays… sheesh, ya’ll have lots of fancy words for stuff, lol), and for heartworm treatment like my roommate, Luke, had!  I’ve heard our humans talkin’ and they said Dog-n-Jog is lots of fun, and there’s still time to register if you wanna help us out!  It’s from 7-10:30am on the Country Club Plaza… that sounds like a fun, exciting place!  Anyways, you can learn more ’bout Dog-n-Jog from this link thingy, www.dognjog.org.

I’m gonna go for now… it’s time for me to go find a mud puddle to play in!  If I don’t get adopted soon, I’ll tell ya ’bout the kinda forever home I’d like when I get to blog next!  I hope to meet you at Dog-n-Jog!!!  Bye!!

Duke

duke30

Hey, my name is Duke.  I’m a 3 year old Shepherd mix.  Sometimes I can be a lil shy, and I’m not real sure what all you might want to know about me, but I’ll fill you in on my history. So, in January, a nice human picked me up and brought me here ’cause I had been hit by a car.  I was in pretty bad shape… like a spinal cord injury (sometimes the way I walk is a little funny), and then on top of that I had heartworm infection!  Well, all the humans I met here and at VCA Welborn took real good care of me, and now I’m all better and ready to find a forever home of my own.  The heartworm treatment was no fun at all, but I know I needed it and am real glad that’s over with.

Uuhhmm… well… oh, I did hear our humans talking about a satellite adoption event called “Paws @ the Mart” that’s comin’ up this Saturday, June 6 from 11-2 at Nebraska Furniture Mart.  I’m gonna stay here at the shelter ’cause Saturdays are usually when my favorite volunteers come in and take me for a few walks, give me lots of treats, and just hang out with me.  I think Luke, Farley, Breann, Mila, and Lucy might go.  Check out HSGKC’s website for more information.  Maybe someone there will see a picture of me and want to meet me… that would be nice.

I do this “air licking” thing when I see a human I know and love, and they all think it’s real cute and make a big deal about how cute it is when I do that.  I’m also real easy to walk on a leash, and I keep my kennel clean.  I’m a sweet boy, but choosy about dogs… like if I had to live with a dog, one who is really mellow would be best… but I’d rather be the center of attention.  I’m good with humans… I just have to warm up to new humans first. I’d like a home with adult humans, and older kids would be fine too.  I did go to a home for a couple days, but there were rules with the kitties inside the house I didn’t really want to pay attention to… I mean c’mon, they run, I’m a dog, of course I’m gonna chase them!

Well… I tried this blog thing out, and even though I kinda skipped around a bit, I’ve never done this kinda thing before so I did my best… and I’m a lil nervous.  Anyway, I hope the sun shines on Saturday for the satellite, and just in general… this rain stinks!  All of us dogs are goin’ a wee bit stir crazy with all of this rain!  Most of us are pretty good about not rollin’ round in the mud puddles, but the puppies and Romy… sheesh, they get our humans really, really muddy… which is funny, but don’t tell them I said that.

I’m gonna go outside for a few minutes before the rain gets worse. Don’t forget about the satellite adoption event on Saturday.  If you want to learn more about me or how to adopt me, you can find that info on HSGKC’s website.  Bye.

Oreo and Brownie (Adopted Together!)

brownie4oreo

Hi!  My name is Oreo an’ me an’ my bro, Brownie, get to try this blog thingy out today. First, I’ll tell ya a lil ’bout us.  See me an’ Brownie came from the same doggy parents an’ this real nice human had us for ’bout 2 years.  He had to move, an’ tried really, really hard to find a place to live where we could live to, but he couldn’t, so he ended up bringin’ us here.  We were kinda scared when we first got here, Brownie more than me, but after gettin’ used to all the noise an’ commotion, an’ goin’s on, we started settlin’ in.  Even though we’d really love to go to a forever home together, we don’t have to… even tho we’d miss each other, we’ll be okay.  Maybe if we don’t get adopted together, our new humans will wanna stay in touch so we can still hang out an’ play together.  Anyways, I got kinda sidetracked.  So, here’s what ya need to know… we’re both Pit Bulls, we’re 2 years old, an’ pretty good with most other dogs.  I’m a lil more picky than Brownie, but maybe it’s ’cause I got a bit more energy than he does!  We love humans!!!  We both love givin’ kisses, an’ goin’ for walks (I heard from some of the other dogs here that if you jump the fence, you getta go on more walks… so I figured out how to jump the fence, tee hee.  The dogs who don’t jump fences get to go on walks, too, but they also get to spend time hangin’ out in the yards longer, in case you were wondering ’bout that).  We both walk pretty good on a leash, an’ are good with adult humans, an’ small humans, or kids, I think.  I would love to chase cats, but our humans won’t let me, an’ I guess I understand that ’cause our humans love all the cats an’ dogs here ’cause they’re awesome like that.  That’s enough ’bout me, I’m gonna let Brownie have a turn now.

Hi… I’m Brownie.  Oreo is a bit more outgoing than I am, not that I’m really shy or anything, but I’m not as outgoing as she is.  I love goin’ on walks, too, and LOVE givin’ kisses! I went to a fundraiser at Gordon Biersch earlier this month, and one of the volunteers there said that I was a real flirt and a charmer… I’m not quite sure what all that means, I was just being myself and giving her lots and lots of kisses!  Oreo and I wanted to kinda tell you what we’re like, and the kind of forever home we’d like because there’s another satellite adoption event on Friday.  It’s at Tail Waggin’ PetStop from 6-8 p.m. May 1st for something called “First Fridays”.  I don’t know if I’m going yet or not, but I know last month Farley went, and this really, really nice human who spent a lot of time with him thought he might be a good match for her and her dog.  After Christine talked with her, Bruno ended up being perfect for her and he went to his forever home on Saturday… so we’re hopeful maybe someone will want to meet us!  I’ve been to a couple satellites and am real well behaved.  I’m good with both big and small humans, and most dogs.  I can handle my sister’s energy, and if I can’t go to a home with her, would really love to have a doggy brother or sister. I’ve been “cat tested” and behaved, but our humans would say that I should really be supervised if I were to go to a home with cats.  Both of us keep clean kennels, so we wouldn’t be hard to house-train… we’d just have to learn the routine in our new home. That’s a good reason to adopt an adult dog versus a puppy, just sayin’, ’cause we’re grown up an’ know house rules, like what not to do in a home.  Well, that’s all from me for now… bye!

I’m gonna finish up for me an’ Brownie… he’s not as much of a talker as me, I guess. Anyways, if you’re not busy with human stuff Friday, you should go to First Friday an’ meet a few of HSGKC’s adoptable dogs!  Tell ’em me an’ Brownie sent you… lol! If ya wanna learn more ’bout us, an’ info ’bout Friday, check out hsgkc.org.  Gotta go… it’s time for me an’ Brownie to settle in for the night.  Bye!!!  XOXO

Luke (Adopted!)

luke1

Hi, my name is Luke and I’m an 8 year old Chow Chow/Shepherd mix.  I came to HSGKC back in December ’cause I was picked up by KCK Animal Control with a real bad front leg… it was broken, and I was in a lot of pain and it couldn’t be fixed, so I had to have it amputated (ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you I get around just fine on 3 legs… us dogs and cats figure out real quick how to manage on 3 legs!)  And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, I also was heartworm positive!  Our people here took really, really good care of me and I’m all healthy now.  I was even pictured on a front page article of the Kansas City Star with Gia a couple of months ago.  I gotta tell you though, heartworm treatment is rough!  I’m real glad that’s over with and that I can run around the yard off leash again!

The reason I get to blog today is ’cause tomorrow I’m gonna go to a fundraising event at Gordon Biersch in Leawood, KS, from 5:30-8:30pm!  They’re doin’ somethin’ called a Maibock Tapping Party to help raise money for us dogs and cats HSGKC takes care of.  I have absoblutely NO idea what Maibock is or a “tapping party” but I guess it’s somethin’ humans like.  I’ve heard of some yummy beer that’s made just for dogs… I wonder if they’ll have any of that there for us, that’d be cool!  I like going to events ’cause it’s fun to meet new people, get lots and lots of attention, and just get out and about!  4 other dogs will be there, too, Hazel, Holly, Charlie, and Farley (sigh, he’s a nice dog… but he’s kinda like a pesky younger brother to me).  I’ll get a lot of attention though because for some reason, people seem to really feel sorry for me ’cause I only have 3 legs.  If you want more info about the event tomorrow, go to www.hsgkc.org.

I wanna tell you a little more about me, too, like about the kinda forever home I’d like.  I’m a mild mannered guy, pretty chill, and would do fine living with other dogs as long as they’re mellow and mild mannered like me.  Puppies are okay, but not really my speed.  I’m good with people and kids… ’cause I’m cool like that, and affectionate.  I like being brushed, and I walk nicely on a leash, too.  However, I am not allowed to live with cats per our humans because I like to chase them!  That’s the only time I give the human walking me a hard time is when I see a cat.  Other than that one little thing, I’m a pretty awesome guy.  I keep a clean kennel, and am good about “kenneling up” when I’m asked to.  A fenced yard would be nice, but I don’t have to have one as long as I’m always walked on a leash (you know, ’cause I wanna chase cats… which is so much fun but I know people would prefer I don’t do that… some people are “cat people”, and I suppose it’s not very nice even though it’s fun).  I don’t bark a whole lot either, so I’d be okay in an apartment or condo.

I’m gonna go for now, but I hope to see you tomorrow night!  Don’t forget, if you wanna learn more about me check me out on HSGKC’s website.  Peace out!
