Luke (Adopted!)

Hi, my name is Luke and I’m an 8 year old Chow Chow/Shepherd mix.  I came to HSGKC back in December ’cause I was picked up by KCK Animal Control with a real bad front leg… it was broken, and I was in a lot of pain and it couldn’t be fixed, so I had to have it amputated (ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you I get around just fine on 3 legs… us dogs and cats figure out real quick how to manage on 3 legs!)  And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, I also was heartworm positive!  Our people here took really, really good care of me and I’m all healthy now.  I was even pictured on a front page article of the Kansas City Star with Gia a couple of months ago.  I gotta tell you though, heartworm treatment is rough!  I’m real glad that’s over with and that I can run around the yard off leash again!

The reason I get to blog today is ’cause tomorrow I’m gonna go to a fundraising event at Gordon Biersch in Leawood, KS, from 5:30-8:30pm!  They’re doin’ somethin’ called a Maibock Tapping Party to help raise money for us dogs and cats HSGKC takes care of.  I have absoblutely NO idea what Maibock is or a “tapping party” but I guess it’s somethin’ humans like.  I’ve heard of some yummy beer that’s made just for dogs… I wonder if they’ll have any of that there for us, that’d be cool!  I like going to events ’cause it’s fun to meet new people, get lots and lots of attention, and just get out and about!  4 other dogs will be there, too, Hazel, Holly, Charlie, and Farley (sigh, he’s a nice dog… but he’s kinda like a pesky younger brother to me).  I’ll get a lot of attention though because for some reason, people seem to really feel sorry for me ’cause I only have 3 legs.  If you want more info about the event tomorrow, go to

I wanna tell you a little more about me, too, like about the kinda forever home I’d like.  I’m a mild mannered guy, pretty chill, and would do fine living with other dogs as long as they’re mellow and mild mannered like me.  Puppies are okay, but not really my speed.  I’m good with people and kids… ’cause I’m cool like that, and affectionate.  I like being brushed, and I walk nicely on a leash, too.  However, I am not allowed to live with cats per our humans because I like to chase them!  That’s the only time I give the human walking me a hard time is when I see a cat.  Other than that one little thing, I’m a pretty awesome guy.  I keep a clean kennel, and am good about “kenneling up” when I’m asked to.  A fenced yard would be nice, but I don’t have to have one as long as I’m always walked on a leash (you know, ’cause I wanna chase cats… which is so much fun but I know people would prefer I don’t do that… some people are “cat people”, and I suppose it’s not very nice even though it’s fun).  I don’t bark a whole lot either, so I’d be okay in an apartment or condo.

I’m gonna go for now, but I hope to see you tomorrow night!  Don’t forget, if you wanna learn more about me check me out on HSGKC’s website.  Peace out!

Connor (Adopted!)

hi my name is Connor, an’ i’m a 5 month old Pit Bull mix!  i’m so excited i get to blog today an’ talk ’bout me ’cause i’ve got lots an’ lots to say, but i won’t talk ’bout all of it!  anyways, i was brought here to HSGKC when i was only a baby, like 7 weeks old, an’ i was real hurt… which is why i’m real lucky a nice person brought me here ’cause i needed to see a special kinda doggy doctor ’cause i couldn’t stand up or walk real good, one of my back legs was broken an’ i had some new-ehr-loh-gi-cull problems, too. our humans are AWESOME ’cause they take real good care of puppies an’ kitties like me.  i had some other stuff goin’ on, too, with my right paw, an’ it had to be taken off… but ya know what?  i feel waaaayyy better with 3 legs ’cause now i can play in play groups (like with Bianca… I LOVE her) an’ i don’t gotta wear a stupid cone to keep me from chewin’ at the wrap thingy on my foot, an’ i just feel better!

i also get to go to sat-ah-lite adop-shun events like the Plaza Art Fair, an’ maybe i’ll get to go to Brookside Barkery & Bath this Saturday.  i like goin’ to adop-shun thingys ’cause all of us doggies an’ puppies get lots an’ lots of attention an’ lots of treats!  i had lots of fun at the Plaza Art Fair, an’ i want to go an’ do somethin’ like that again!!  in case i do get to go, i wanna go ahead an’ tell ya ’bout the kinda forever home i’d really like to have.  first, i like to bark… kinda lots, so i think our humans say i’d do best in a house instead of an apartment.  i’m not sure what that is, but sounds good to me!  i LOVE humans!!!  us Pit Bulls are way awesome with humans, an’ i like all sizes… big humans an’ lil humans like me!  i’d really, really, love to have a doggy brother or sister to play with, like Bianca!  i love wrestlin’ an’ playin’ tug an’ stuff with dogs! my only havin’ 3 legs doesn’t stop me from doin’ much, i’ve got lots of energy an’ do like to go on walks, too, but i love to play, an’ just do stuff!

anyways, that’s all for now!  if you wanna learn more ’bout me, check me out on  i’ve been thru a LOT already an’ i’m a lil guy still, so i’d love to find a home an’ family of my own soon!  bye!!!

my only havin’ 3 legs doesn’t stop me from takin’ myself for a walk either!

meet adoptable dogs and cats at Brookside Barkery & Bath on Sat. Oct 18!… more >

Baloo (Adopted!)

Hey humans, my name is Baloo.  I was in really bad shape when my former owner brought me here.  My leg was real bad from being hit by a car or maybe I got into a fight or somethin’ like that, so to save my life it was amputated.  I needed lots of stuff, like medicine, and fluids, and lotsa food, and other stuff to make me feel better.  I’m kinda awesome, though, ’cause I made it through all that stuff and gained some weight (I only weighed like 46 pounds when I came in).  Now I’m doin’ way better and moved out to the main kennel and got a roommate named Rosie. She’s nice, and chill.  Don’t let me only havin’ 3 legs scare you off, ’cause dogs and cats like me (even though I don’t get it that humans like cats so much… they’re fun to watch, but soooo moody) don’t have any hang-ups about not havin’ 4 legs.  I’ve got 3 good ones, and can move and run ’round real good.

So, in case you see me and think I might be a good fit for you, I gotta tell you a few things about me.  First, I’m picky about some humans, and dogs.  I don’t like everybody I meet (dogs or humans) but can you blame me… if you saw what I looked like when I came in, you’d totally understand.  I’d like to go to a home with humans who’ve had Boxers before, ’cause they “get” us, and they gotta know what they’re doin’ to help me with some of my human issues.  I’m not aggressive or nothin’ like that, but if I meet dudes that scare me, I bark a lot ’cause I dunno what they’re all about yet.  Anyways, I know how to “sit” ’cause then I get yummy treats, and I’m goofy.  I like to run ’round the yards we get to go out in, and I gots the Boxer wiggle thing goin’ on for me, too.  I’m not real hyper, and I don’t jump a fence or nothin’ crazy like that.  I walk pretty good on a leash, too, if I do say so myself, even though I can’t walk real far yet.  I’m gettin’ better everyday ’cause the humans here take real good care of all of us.  Anyways, I gotta go ’cause I get to go run ’round the yard some more with Rosie.  She just watches me run, but that’s cool.  Bye!

I'm gettin' along just fine on three legs!
