Bianca, aka “Binx”

Heya humans, what’s up?!?!  I haven’t checked in for a while, an’ wanted to fill ya in on some stuff goin’ on.  First, my buddy Zappa is in a foster home now, an’ he’s doin’ pretty good with the human who’s fosterin’ him… he’s still got lots to learn ’bout bein’ in a home, but everyone is real happy for him ’cause he gotta go to a foster home!  Anyways, I do miss him tho… he was my walkin’ an’ car ride buddy!  I go on lots of walks with other dogs, like Orchid, but haven’t found a doggy I can play with like I did with Skye an’ Echo.  Our humans are workin’ on findin’ me a friend, tho, I know it!  I’m gettin’ LOTS of extra attention from staff an’ volunteers since Zappa isn’t here… like last Saturday, this real nice volunteer, Blake, played fetch with me, an’ even helped me dig a hole!!!  He’s silly, like me, an’ we had lots of fun!  I was worn out after we played for about an hour!  I hope he comes in again this Saturday to hang out with me!

My new sweater Christine found for me… Maddie tried it on to make sure it fit. I only look a lil serious ’cause she was holdin’ my squeaky toy! They think Blue is a great color on me… what do you think??

That reminds me… on Saturday there’s gonna be a Valentine’s Day party for us dogs! It’s called “Have a Heart for HSGKC’s Adoptable Dogs”, an’ it’s from 1-3pm on Saturday, February 13. Check out our website for more details, but I think it’s cool!  Our humans wanted to have a party for us ’cause I guess February has lots of days dedicated to dogs… like this week is Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week (I think that’s REAL important, btw), an’ February is also Dog Training Education Month, which ties in with HSGKC’s BEG Program. Plus, our volunteers and staff will bring some of us out to meet humans, an’ hang out with ya!  I’m excited ’bout that part ’cause I LOVE spending time with humans, like Christine… she usually spends some time with me everyday, an’ knows I like climbin’ in her lap, an’ givin’ her kisses, an’ hugs an’ just lovin’ on her!  Even tho I’ve got lots of energy, it’s usually just at first ’cause I’m excited to see someone, then I relax a lil’… most of the time… an’ I still remember the stuff I learned in obedience class, like how to “sit”, an’ “lay down”!  I had my pic taken with Jai for Valentine’s Day, too, and it is pretty darn cute… so be sure to check us out on Facebook an’ Instagram!

K… gotta run!  I hope I get to see you Saturday!

Brinkley

Hey there… my name is Brinkley, and I’m tryin’ out this blog thing for the first time.  I’m about 2 1/2 years old, and an American Bulldog/Boxer mix.  I arrived at HSGKC last summer… I was with a real nice woman who couldn’t keep me ’cause she was havin’ a lot of stuff goin’ on in her life.  She really did “rescue” me… see I had a great dad, but after he passed away I was real shy, and scared.  The family didn’t want me to go to a shelter in Oklahoma (that’s where I’m from) ’cause I was so shy with a lot of new men, and they were afraid I wouldn’t get adopted… so the woman who was fostering me contacted HSGKC and I got to come here.

I’m happy I’m here ’cause the humans here are really, really nice, and patient with me. My favorite human is Amber… she works with all the dogs in the shelter.  I love everyone else I’ve met, too, both staff and volunteers, but Amber is still my fav.  I was super nervous when I got here, but I’m doin’ a lot better now.  My roommate is Diesel… he’s a sweet, cool, guy… who is like my “little brother” (even though he’s older than me) ’cause sometimes he gets on my nerves a lil… just ’cause he’s always wantin’ to give me kisses. But I like cuddling up with him at night.

Me giving Amber kisses after our afternoon walk.

So… in case you wanna know about the kind of forever home I’d like, I guess I should tell you a little more about myself.  I’m still shy with new humans, especially men… so I need humans who will be patient with me, and understand how I am, and probably not real young/small humans.  I’m kinda choosy when it comes to my doggy friends… I’m still tryin’ to figure out exactly how to play with other dogs.  Diesel is teaching me when he can, but we don’t always go outside in the yard together because I’m so talented, I can jump a 6′ fence… so we can only go out in the yard when no other dogs are out which is kinda hard to do right now.  We’re gettin’ our new 8′ fence in pretty soon, and I’m real excited about that so I can play outside more often with Diesel.  I’ve met a few dogs, but prefer dogs who aren’t real high energy… so Diesel’s a good match for me.  Even though I wanna chase cats, I know our humans don’t like that, so I need a home without cats.  I love Milkbones, and dog treats… I’ll sit pretty, and shake, and lay down for treats.  After I’ve gotten to know a human, and trust them, I’m very loyal, and affectionate with them… just check out the picture of me and Amber for Valentine’s Day on HSGKC’s Facebook page.

I got back from my walk with Diesel a few minutes ago, and saw some guys comin’ in to work on the plumbing… so I gotta go keep an eye on them and make sure they stay outta trouble.  I’ll try to check in again soon.

Sasha (Adopted!)

sasha2

Hiya humans, my name is Sasha.  I’m about 2 years old, and I’m a Lab/maybe-some-Boxer mix.  I was found as a stray by KCK Animal Control back in March.  I was real sick with somethin’ called Parvovirus, and another tummy bug, and heartworm infection, AND I was real skinny… so, I was a mess.  I’m almost finished with my heartworm treatment, and I’ve gained almost 20 pounds since I first got here… so ya know our humans are takin’ real good care of me!  I’m happy, too, ’cause I got moved to the back room in the kennel area… see our humans gotta have a place to fix our food, do laundry, and give us baths, and when this building was designed they put a run in the back room for a special dog.  I know the doggy run back there is now called “Smiley’s Run” and it’s for special dogs like him and me who just need some extra TLC!  I LOVE bein’ in the back room!  I getta hang out with the humans who take care of us doggies and some of the humans who take care of the kitties, too!  I have my own doggy bed that I can lay on and I have more room to move around.  I love it when humans come back and visit me and I get so happy and excited to see them I use my paws a lot to get their attention, and to get them to play with me.  I play bow a lot… but they don’t seem to get that move… silly humans!  I getta just hang out in the back room… unless they have to bring another dog back to get a bath, then I have to go in my kennel ’cause I’m not a huge fan of other dogs, I prefer to have all the attention for myself.  I’ll tell ya ’bout that the next time I blog… for now I got somethin’ else to tell ya ’bout: Dog-N-Jog.

I’ve heard our humans talkin’ bout this big event thingy called Dog-N-Jog (I’m gonna call it DNJ for the rest of my blog… too much to type out, lol).  Anyways, DNJ is this Sunday, June 14 from 7-10:30 a.m. on the Country Club Plaza.  There’s a 1 and 2 mile run and a 1 mile walk, an agility course, and lots of other fun stuff.  If ya wanna learn more ’bout it and register online, go to www.hsgkc.org.  I’ve heard it’s fun for humans and doggies, and it raises money for our humans to keep takin’ care of dogs like me who are real sick, and need lots of medical care to get better!  I can’t go ’cause I’ve got ’bout 2 1/2 weeks left of “leash walk only” before I can run ’round.  That’s ’cause of the heartworm treatment… see I can’t have my heart goin’ too fast or it’d be real bad for me… so I’m gonna supervise the humans who are gonna bathe the dogs who are goin’ to DNJ to make sure they look their best!  Sometimes you humans need help from us dogs, too!  I keep myself real clean, my kennel is clean, and when the doggy yard is really muddy,  I’m always super careful to avoid the muddy spots when I go out for my morning walk!  I think I heard our humans sayin’ that maybe 7-8 dogs from here are gonna go to DNJ and represent all of us dogs here at HSGKC!  Whoever blogs tomorrow will fill ya in on who’s gonna go.  If you’re goin’ to DNJ and ya have a Black dog like me, be aware of signs of overheating… see ’cause of our coats bein’ Black, we get hot lots faster than other colors of dogs!  I know that may seem silly, but some humans don’t know that.

Well, that’s all I got for now… I’ll tell ya more ’bout me and the kinda forever home I’d like next time!  Bye!

Hercules

Hey humans, how’s it goin’?  All of us dogs here are doin’ all right.  After a bit of discussion amongst our humans, they’ve decided that I’m the new narrator for the HSGKC Dog Blog since Smiley is now at the Rainbow Bridge.  I’m happy I was chosen to narrate (and I’m not at all surprised I was chosen, I mean, c’mon, I’m “Hercules the Magnificent” after all).

With my new title, this means I will fill you humans in on the stuff that’s goin’ on here at HSGKC.  The KC Pet Telethon was a success, from what I’ve heard.  All I know is that I was AWESOME!  Christine worked with me for about 2 weeks to prepare for our spot on the Telethon, and I learned how to do some neat new tricks, like “finish”, “turn”, “spin”, and “crawl”.  She was even more proud of me than she was last year ’cause I was so good for her!  I can even do a lot of the stuff she taught me off leash, but that’s ’cause she always has really yummy treats for me, and I love workin’ for food!  She’s gonna keep workin’ with me and teach me some new stuff, but I heard her talkin’ to Pete and Kate about Shiloh… I guess I’m gonna have to share some of Christine’s time with Shiloh because he needs to learn some obedience stuff, too, especially how to “stay”!  I know I’m the smartest dog in the kennel, and as much as I hate to admit this (so don’t tell Shiloh, please), he’s a clever dude!  He knows how to make a mad dash out of the building so our humans have to go chase him and lure him back… which is pretty funny!  I don’t bother with those types of “games” ’cause I know my food is here, and my treats, so I wouldn’t run off!

I also heard some talk about a satellite adoption event Saturday, March 21, at Four Paws Pantry and Spa in Olathe from 11-3.  I think Aubrey‘s gonna go, and I heard maybe Brownie will go to his first satellite.  I do like going to satellites, occasionally, but I’d rather stay here Saturdays to human and dog watch… plus Saturdays are when the most volunteers come in, so I get A LOT of treats!  I’m not gonna miss out on that for anything!

I almost forgot… big news… Gia, aka “Big G” was adopted Tuesday.  She’s been my neighbor for almost a year, so I’m gonna kinda miss her, but I’m real happy her humans came along and adopted her!  She’d been here for a little over a year, and was even skinnier than I was when I came in.  She was lookin’ pretty good, ya know, for an American Bulldog.

One other lil bit of gossip/news, for those of you who have seen pictures of Pibble on our Facebook, Instagram or Twitter pages, she’s doin’ real well.  I know I’m Christine’s most favorite dog, but I think Pibble is givin’ me a lil competition.  Pibble’s healing well and is a real friendly girl from what I’ve heard.  She won’t be ready for adoption for a while, but I thought ya might wanna know she’s doin’ good.  That’s what makes this shelter so awesome… our humans really do everything they can to help us dogs so we can go to a forever home.  I was skinny, and heartworm positive when I came in, and look at how handsome I am now!

That’s all the news I have for now.  I’ll check in with you again soon.

Lucy: Watch for Me on the KC Pet Telethon this Sunday

lucy31

Hey humans, how are you?  None of us dogs blogged for a while because we wanted to respect Smiley‘s passing ’cause we know it was real sad for our humans.  Us dogs mourned, too, in our own way.  We’ll all miss him!

On a happier note, I’m really excited about a few things. I stopped givin’ our humans such a hard time, and have been really good in the yard lately… meaning I don’t jump the fence anymore as long as someone is outside with me.  That’s why I was jumping the fence, so I could go on walks (other than the Pack Walk, of course, I always get to go on those), and spend more time humans ’cause that’s what I love.  I even have a favorite volunteer, Crissy!  She spends lots of time with me when she comes in and she always walks me, too!  I think I’m her favorite!

Here’s my big news… I’m going to be on the KC Pet Telethon!!!!!  I found out Tuesday that I was chosen to be on the KC Pet Telethon this year, and I’m so happy about it.  It’s from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on March 1st, on 38 The Spot.  I don’t know all the details, just that it’s real big deal for our humans because the KC Pet Telethon brings in lots of donations for our shelter.  Those donations help our humans care for us dogs and cats (I still don’t see what all the fuss is about cats, but I know some humans really like them… I do enjoy watching them run around in the cat rooms, though), and help humans who live around here with their pets by providing low cost spay/neuter and wellness care (pets need to go to the doctor sometimes, too, ya know).  I knew something was up Tuesday morning ’cause Christine and Pete introduced me to Nemo (we’ll be going on TV together).  After maybe a minute, I decided I liked him okay and started to play with him a little bit.  Pete and Christine were really impressed about how good I was (I have a little crush on Diesel, too, but he’s healing from a surgery he had to have on his knee) with Nemo… so maybe if we keep doin’ real well together, we can hang out in the yard and play together.  I’ve heard the KC Pet Telethon is going to be even more fun to watch this year than last year with more fun stuff about our dogs and cats. I hope maybe someone will see me on TV and say “wow, she’s a beautiful dog… I want to meet her”.  I’ll get a bath and a pretty new collar to wear on TV, so I’m sure I’ll be looking pretty!

Make sure to watch the Telethon, donate, and check me out >
I’m gonna go for now, Pete is doing Volunteer Orientation, and I gotta check out the new humans coming in to meet us.  Bye!

Dooney (Adopted!)

Hey humans!  It’s been a while since I last checked in on this blog thing, and a lot has happened since I last wrote… like Darla finding her forever home!  Even though I prefer my own company (and not to share attention from humans with other dogs or cats), I’m very happy for her ’cause I heard she had been here for a while, waiting for her humans to find her.  When I say she’d been here a while, please don’t think anything negative about HSGKC… see from what I’ve noticed ’round here, this is a special shelter.  Our humans care about us lots and lots, and want us to find forever homes, but lots of us dogs who are here make that job a bit challenging at times.  So, if it takes more time for us to go to the right home for us, well, then it takes more time.  Anyways, Darla was here for a spell ’cause she’s not good with most other dogs, or cats, but she’s perfect with humans, especially small humans, or kids.  I’m also great with humans and kids, and love spending time with volunteers on Pack Walks, and playing in the yard (and with my favorite volunteer, Stan).  They try to play fetch with me, but I’m quite a tease about bringing back the rope or ball to them… they think it’s frustrating, and I think it’s funny!  I gotta entertain myself sometimes!

So after Darla went to her forever home, I started thinking ’bout my ideal forever home. I want to be the only pet.  I do want all of the attention for myself, and even though I’m 5 years old, don’t let that fool you… I’d love an active person or family to live with!  Last fall, Pete and Christine taught me some agility stuff, and I LOVE AGILITY!!!  It’s so much fun!  I’m very precise, and really have fun running up the A-Frame, and over the Bar Jump!  I’m pretty good on a leash, and love going for walks, and would love to go for runs or jogs, too.  I’d probably be okay in an apartment, as long as my new family would take me someplace (by myself, of course) to run around in a fenced in area.  I’d love a house with a fenced yard, but an apartment would work in a pinch.  I’m pretty smart, too, and Stan is taking me to obedience classes at The Dogs’ Spot.  I’m learning all kinds of things, like “sit”, “down”, “leave-it”, “watch me”, and I’m working on “stays” even though they aren’t my favorite thing to do (“stays” are kind of boring).  I love going to class with Stan on Saturdays!  I’m excited about this Saturday ’cause in the morning I’m going on TV! You can see me on KSHB Channel 41.  My Saturday is going to be AWESOME!

this is me learning how to do the teeter totter!

this is me learning how to do the teeter totter!

That’s all I’ve got for now…but I heard I’m probably going on the KC Pet Telethon this year, so if you miss me on TV Saturday morning, make sure to watch for me on the Pet Telethon.  It’s Sunday, March 1st, from 6:30-9:30pm on 38 The Spot (all that’s a mouthful… sheesh).  Peace out, I’ll talk at ya’ll later!

hi everybody!  i haven’t checked in on this blog thingy for a while, and i didn’t want ya to forget i’m still here and lookin’ for my forever home!  anyways, i thought ya might wanna see some new pics of me and  a short video of me an’ Echo an’ Connor playin’ in our yard in the hay!  we had so much fun spreadin’ the hay stuff all over the whole yard and playing a game of tug!  it was AWESOME!!!

bianca_echo_lunch2yesterday, Jai (she’s like my most FAVORITE human here, and i know she’d take me home if she could, but i’m not great with cats… so i’ll wait til someone who doesn’t have cats wants to adopt me)… oops, i got kinda sidetracked…bianca_echo_lunch1 anyways, Jai took me and Echo, who’s my BFF now that Connor‘s been adopted, to lunch with her!  we had so much fun ridin’ in the car with her!  i wanted to ride on Jai’s lap, but tried to behave… but it’s hard ’cause i wanted to be in front so i could see everything that was goin’ on!  Jai got somethin’ yummy to eat, but i was too busy watchin’ out the front of the car, so i let Echo eat all the food!  that’s okay, ’cause she can gain a few pounds… i’ve heard some of our humans call me a “tank”… i’m not sure what that word means, but i think it’s ’cause i’m stocky and strong!

before i go i wanna tell ya that i heard our humans talkin’ ’bout this thingy they’re gettin’ ready for called the KC Pet Telethon!  they said it’s like this real big deal ’cause doggies get to go on somethin’ called tell-eh-vi-shon, and it raises lots of money for HSGKC.  it’s on Sunday, March 1 from 6:30 to 9:30pm on Channel 38 the Spot. if you watch you’ll see adoptable dogs, pet tricks, educational stuff, and best of all you’ll find out how to save a life and give pets like me a second chance!  i heard that there’s lots more info on the KC Pet Telethon web site >

i’m gonna go for now ’cause it’s time to go play with Echo some more!  ‘member, if ya wanna learn more ’bout adoptin’ me, check me out on my Petfinder page!  bye!!
